The Opening

The first part of the meeting that is represented by an open door. On the other side of the door is your most authentic self. The self you always knew you were deep inside. The group will pick pieces of themselves they wish to keep or let go of and add other traits that they always knew they appreciated but maybe didn't practice. This is where you will see the distance between you and where you want to be.  In this distance you will then follow your compass to true north!

The Compass

The values and traits highlighted in the Opening must now be solidified in our consciousness through our daily actions. If you cherish peace of mind, embodying your true self requires you to take tangible steps in the world to practice that value. What might those steps be? Just as a compass guides you toward your destination, these actionable steps help us align with our authentic selves by rooting us in reality, rather than merely in the idealized version of you.

The Rebellion

The Rebellion is where we truthfully and without any sense of shame discuss our triumphs, our failures, our bad attempts, and everything that goes into pushing that heavy boulder up the steep hill, just to watch it inevitably come rolling back down again. We see what worked and what didn't. We take the time to reflect and say that the heights of the hill were absolutely worth the challenging climb, filled with lessons learned and experiences gained along the way.

Live Awake

An introduction to Authentic Rebellion and the framework at its center — The Opening, The Compass, The Rebellion.

There is a woman I want you to picture. She is good at her job. Genuinely good. She hits her numbers, shows up early, gets along with everyone. On paper, her life is working. And yet, somewhere around 2pm on a Tuesday, she stares at her screen and feels — not sadness exactly, not despair — just a low, persistent hum of wrongness. Like a note being played slightly out of tune. It is the strangest feeling — as though she has stepped outside of herself and is watching from somewhere just above, looking in, watching her own shoulders slowly slump, watching herself reach for the coffee she doesn't really want, hearing the hum she can't quite name and cannot make stop. She closes the tab she wasn't supposed to have open, refills her coffee, and gets back to it.

She is not broken. She is not ungrateful. She is living in bad faith.

Jean-Paul Sartre coined the term. He meant it precisely. Bad faith — in existentialist philosophy, the act of pretending we have no choice — is what happens when we hand the authorship of our lives to our circumstances, our roles, our histories, and call it maturity. The existentialists were unsparing about this. They did not think it was fine. They thought it was a slow, quiet tragedy.

No instructions. No manual. Just you, standing at the edge of your own life, deciding what it means. The condemnation is the gift. The freedom is the weight. Most of us spend our lives finding sophisticated ways to put that weight down.

It starts early. You are assigned a role before you can question it. Dutiful child. Good student. Reliable employee. Agreeable partner. Each role comes with a costume, a set of lines, an audience that rewards you for staying in character. And you are good at it. You have had decades of practice.

The problem — the one the existentialists kept returning to, from different angles, in different centuries, with different degrees of fury — is that none of those roles are you. They are approximations. Performances. And the distance between the performance and the performer is where the wrongness lives. That low hum. That 2pm Tuesday feeling.

Albert Camus described the moment of recognition as the absurd — the collision between our deep human hunger for meaning and a universe that offers none in return. He didn't think that collision was a problem to be solved. He thought it was the starting point. The place where the real work begins.

Not because the boulder is light. Not because the hill gets smaller. But because the struggle itself, chosen consciously and lived fully, is enough. The revolt — Camus's word for the conscious refusal to be defeated by the absurd — is in the choosing. That is what Authentic Rebellion is built on.

There are no affirmations here. No five steps to your best life. No promise that if you journal consistently and drink enough water, you will finally feel okay.

What we offer is harder and more honest than that. We offer a framework — three parts, designed not to fix you but to return you to yourself. To the version of you that exists regardless of what the world tells you to be. To the person who was always there, underneath the roles and the routines and the years of making yourself legible to other people.

We call it the Authentic Rebellion Framework.

The Opening

Imagine a door. On the other side of it stands the most authentic self — a core existentialist concept meaning the self that is genuinely yours, unconditioned by external pressure or social performance. The one who isn't performing, isn't managing impressions, isn't living by someone else's script.

The Opening is the practice of standing in front of that door and identifying those parts that belong and those that no longer serve you. Not values or traits you inherited. Not ones that look good on paper. The ones that belong to the version of you that exists regardless of what the world tells you to be.

These are not fixed. They shift as you do. A value that felt essential at thirty might feel like a costume at forty-five. That is not failure. That is growth. The practice is returning to the question, again and again, with honesty.

Søren Kierkegaard spent his entire philosophical life on this problem. He called it becoming a self — not discovering a self that was already finished and waiting, but actively, continuously choosing who you are. The alternative he named despair — not the weeping kind, but the quiet, corrosive kind that comes from failing to become who you actually are. "The most common form of despair," he wrote, "is not being who you are."

Over time, the values and traits you identify become your north star. Like a compass, they guide you to step through the door and begin forging your own authentic self. The door is always there. Most people just never stop long enough to see it.

The Compass

A compass doesn't tell you where you have to go. It tells you where you are in relation to where you want to be. Once you've identified your values or traits, the Compass is where they stop being ideas and start being a life. This is the translation layer — the place where philosophy meets Tuesday morning.

The existentialists had a phrase for this: existence precedes essence. Sartre's most radical claim — that we are not born with a fixed nature or purpose, that we exist first and define ourselves through our choices afterward. There is no blueprint. There is only what you do next.

If one of your values is peace of mind, then you meditate before you open your phone. If your value is courage, then you send the email you've been avoiding. You have the conversation you've been rehearsing for six months. You apply for the thing you told yourself you weren't ready for yet.

Simone de Beauvoir wrote that we are not born courageous or cowardly, generous or selfish. We become those things through our choices, accumulated over time, until the pattern becomes a character. This is what existentialists call radical responsibility — the understanding that because we are free, we are fully responsible for who we become. No exceptions. No asterisks. "One is not born a woman," she wrote — but the insight reaches further than gender. One is not born anything that matters. One becomes. Every day. Through the small, specific, often uncomfortable decisions that nobody else sees.

The needle points. You start walking.

This is where we come back to earth. You tried something. Maybe it worked. Maybe it collapsed spectacularly. Maybe you got three days in and realized the value you chose was aspirational rather than honest, and you had to go back to the door and start again. All of that is welcome here.

The Rebellion is the space where we share. Honestly. What we tried, what held, what fell apart. Because rebellion doesn't have to be a solo act — sharing the suffering and the joy, that is so very human. And for what it's worth, being human may just be the purpose for us after all.

Friedrich Nietzsche believed that the examined life — the one lived with full awareness of its difficulty and its beauty — was the only life worth the name. He asked us to want our lives so completely that we would choose to live them again, exactly as they were, forever. He called it amor fati — Latin for love of fate. Not resignation. Not passive acceptance. Active, defiant embrace of the life that is yours.

We close every gathering with memento mori — Latin for "remember that you have to die." Not as morbidity. As the oldest, most honest productivity hack ever devised. Martin Heidegger called it Being-toward-death — the philosophical practice of keeping our own finitude close, not to depress us but to clarify us. It strips away the noise. It asks: if not now, when? If not this, what?

Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist who survived Nazi concentration camps and built an entire school of thought from the experience, called the search for meaning logotherapy — the idea that human beings can endure almost anything if they understand why. He wrote: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances."

That is not a consolation. That is a challenge. And it is the one we issue, every time we gather.

It is for the woman at her desk at 2pm on a Tuesday who cannot name what's wrong but knows something is. The one watching herself from the outside, hearing the hum, waiting for something to shift.

It is for the man who has built everything he was supposed to want and is standing in the middle of it feeling strangely empty.

It is for anyone who suspects that the life they are living is a very convincing approximation of the life they actually want — and who is ready to close the gap.

As AI and technology remake the conditions of our lives at a speed no philosopher anticipated, we think the existentialist questions matter more than ever. Not less. The noise is louder. The roles are more numerous. The pressure to perform a self rather than inhabit one has never been greater.

The rebellion is quieter than it sounds. It begins with a door. It continues with a compass. It sustains itself in community.

Who do you choose to be?

The answer is yours. It always was. We're just the people asking the question out loud, together.
